MP and MLA Arrested in 'Hanuman Chalisa' Fight With Uddhav Thackeray

Amravati MP Navneet Rana and her husband MLA Ravi Rana were arrested by Mumbai police on Saturday evening from their home in suburban Khar amid high drama, hours after the couple cancelled their plan to recite the Hanuman Chalisa outside Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray's private residence 'Matoshree.'

According to the police, the Ranas were charged with violating IPC section 153 (A) (promoting enmity between different groups on the basis of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to the maintenance of harmony) and section 135 of the Mumbai Police Act (violation of prohibitory orders of police).

Devendra Fadnavis, a BJP leader, remarked in Nagpur that the Shiv Sena-led Maharashtra government's handling of the entire affair was "extremely juvenile."

According to the former chief minister, the state administration tries to disguise its failings by labelling the circumstances it can't handle as BJP-sponsored.

"If they had been allowed, the Ranas would have gone there (Matoshree), chanted the Hanuman Chalisa, and returned without making any news. I'm not sure why so many people had collected in various locations, as if they (the Rana couple) were organising an attack. What type of political system is this?" According to the BJP leader.

While announcing their decision to cancel wedding plans, the pair stated that the decision was made since Prime Minister Modi is visiting Mumbai tomorrow and they do not want a law and order crisis to occur. Shiv Sena members rejoiced outside their home by handing away sweets.

Sena activists gathered in huge numbers outside the Rana couple's Mumbai flat this morning, shouting slogans after they declared their intention to perform the Hanuman Chalisa outside 'Matoshree.'

The Shiv Sena workers burst over the barriers and attempted to enter the grounds of the lawmaker couple's house in Suburban Khar, but the police quickly got the situation under control and prevented the Shiv Sena workers from proceeding.

Navneet Rana and Ravi Rana are both independent lawmakers from Maharashtra's Vidarbha area.

To minimise crowds, police have strengthened security outside 'Matoshree' and installed barricades on the road leading to the Thackeray mansion. Police were also stationed outside the couple's flat after Shiv Sena workers staged rallies and challenged the pair to leave their home.

The pair received a notification from Mumbai police on Friday, telling them not to disrupt the city's law and order situation. In addition to 'Matoshree,' the police have reinforced protection at 'Varsha,' Uddhav Thackeray's official mansion in south Mumbai.

Despite the Shiv Sena's ire and the Mumbai Police's notice, the pair maintained they were sticking to their plan. "The Chief Minister of Maharashtra directed Shiv Sena workers to heckle us." They're tearing down the barriers. "I reiterate that I will walk outdoors and recite Hanuman Chalisa at 'Matroshree,'" Navneet Rana stated.

Ravi Rana, Navneet Rana's husband, criticised Uddhav Thackeray on the matter of philosophy, stating that the Maharashtra Chief Minister had drifted from Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray's ideology.

"This is not the Shiv Sena founded by Balasaheb Thackeray. That Shiv Sena would have let us recite Hanuman Chalisa,' Mr Rana explained.

He said that Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray was abusing his authority. "We are not permitted to leave our home by the police. The Chief Minister has directed them to do so, and Shiv Sena members are attempting to assault our house "Mr. Rana said.

Shiv Sena members have been camped outside 'Matoshree' since yesterday, protesting the political couple's intentions. Kishori Pednekar, a former Mumbai mayor and Shiv Sena leader, stated, "We have accepted the Rana couple's challenge. Allow them to arrive; we are ready to greet them and provide them 'prasad.'"

The party officials accused the BJP of plotting a plot to harass the state's Sena-led coalition government and of using the Ranas and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) Chief Raj Thackeray as puppets.

"They (MLA Ravi Rana and MP Navneet Rana) have questioned the state of law and order. Someone urged them to do this. Shiv Sena members have arrived to safeguard 'Matoshree,' "Shiv Sena MP Anil Desai stated.

Sanjay Raut, the party's senior leader, referred to the lawmaker pair as 'Bunty aur Babli,' a reference to a Hindi film. "People like Rana are characters in the BJP's nautanki (drama) and stunt. This stunt is not taken seriously by the public "He stated.

Dilip Walse Patil, the state's home minister, said that the couple's effort to recite Hanuman Chalisa outside 'Matoshree' was part of a plot to disrupt the state's law and order situation.

"Amravati MP Navneet Rana and her husband Ravi Rana intend to sully the state government's image and destabilise the situation. What is the point of chanting Hanuman Chalisa outside of 'Matoshree'? They may do it at their leisure "Mr Patil stated.

150 Responses Earlier this month, Ravi Rana urged that the Chief Minister recite Hanuman Chalisa at his house on Hanuman Jayanti "to free Maharashtra of difficulties." His request came in response to MNS Chief Raj Thackeray's 'ultimatum' to the state government to remove loudspeakers from mosques by May 3.
